In the Union of Arab Republics (Arab Union), a handful of sub-national geographical/political entities not forming part of any republic of the Arab Union, the Kurdistan Autonomous Region, nor the federal capital of Nasseria, are officially designated as Federal Territories (Arabic: مقاطعة فدرالية muqāṭaʿah fidirālīyah; pl. مقاطعات فدرالية muqāṭaʿāt fidirālīyah), which encompass territory under the direct sovereignty of the federal government of the Arab Union, whose territorial governments are directly answerable to the federal government via the federal Council of Ministers' Ministry of Territories via the process of devolution. Well-known examples include the Indian Ocean islands of Socotra, Mayotte, Mauritius and Abu Mousa, the islands of Canarias, Gran Canaria and Cape Verde off the coast of Western Africa in the Atlantic Ocean, and Cyprus and Malta in the Mediterranean Sea.
