Jump to navigationJump to searchAkkar is one of the 28 municipalities of Lebanon, and its northernmost city and municipality. The municipality consists of the main coastal city of Akkar and its metropolitan area as well as some rural areas and hamlets. In December 2020, Akkar had an estimated population of 440,830, over half of whom live in the main urban area. The municipalities has a roughly equal amount of Sunni Muslims, Greek Orthodox Christians and Maronite Christians, which together account for 90% of the population. The remaining are mostly Shia Muslims, split roughly evenly between Twelvers and Ismailis, with some Alawites as well as other religious minorities like Jews and the Druze.
