The Arab Socialist Union was the founding political party of the United Arab Republic, which was later renamed the Union of Arab Republics following its reorganisation from a unitary state to a federation under the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party in 1989. The party was the political party of Gamal Abdel Nasser, the first President of the Arab Union, who served from the formation of the union in 1958 until his death in 1970. He was succeeded by the Ba'athist Hafez al-Assad.
