Cabinet Secretary of British Columbia
The Cabinet Secretary of British Columbia is a senior position within the Executive Council of British Columbia, the top executive body of the provincial government of the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC), and the cabinet of the Premier of British Columbia. The Cabinet Secretary of British Columbia is considered the highest-ranking member of the British Columbia Civil Service (BCCS), the provincial government's civil service commission. The Cabinet Secretary of BC is the only member of the Executive Council of BC not to have been elected to the post or appointed by the Premier, rather holding the position ex officio as Director of the British Columbia Civil Service.
The Cabinet Secretary of BC's primary responsibilities outside of the BCCS (that is, when attending meetings of the Executive Council of BC) include hosting Executive Council meetings, moderating debates, arranging transcriptions and sometimes recordings of Executive Council meetings, and other responsibilities as directed by the Premier. While the Cabinet Secretary is the de jure Director and highest-ranking member of the BC Civil Service, the Cabinet Secretary appoints a deputy director to handle the day-to-day affairs of leading the civil service to allow for the Cabinet Secretary to meet his/her responsibilities to the Executive Council of BC.
