The Canadian Army (French: Armée canadienne) is the largest of the four commands of the unified Canadian Forces, responsible for the operational readiness of the conventional ground forces of Canada. It consists of 553,508 active-duty personnel and 289,478 reserve personnel, and is supported by approximately 65,000 civilian personnel from the civil service administration of the Department of National Defence (DND). The Canadian Army maintains regular forces units at bases across Canada, with its headquarters at CFB Petawawa, in southeastern Ontario on the southern bank of the Ottawa River, approximately 115 kilometres northwest of the federal capital of Ottawa. Most of its reserve forces are drawn from the Canadian Army Primary Reserve, which is the more professional and well-trained of the three reserve forces of the Army, and which consists of over twice as many reserve personnel as the Secondary Reserve and Tertiary Reserve combined. The Commander of the Canadian Army and Chief of the Army Staff is Lieutenant-General Wayne Eyre.
