The Canadian Armed Forces (French: Forces armées canadiennes), informally known as the Canadian Forces (Forces canadiennes), are the armed forces of the Canadian Republic, overseen by the Department of National Defence (DND). The Canadian Forces consists of four main service branches: the Army, Navy, Aerospace Forces, and the Gendarmerie, the last of which serves as the military police (provost) of the first three branches as well as Canada's border patrol and rural law enforcement agency with full civilian law enforcement authority in peacetime.
