Carthage (Arabic: قرطاج qarṭāj) is a borough (casbah) of Tunis, the capital and largest city of the Tunisian Arab Republic, located northeast of the city centre. The borough is named after and located on the site of the capital city of the Carthaginian civilisation, an ancient Phoenician thalassocratic society which dominated much of the Mediterranean Sea in its heyday during classical antiquity. Carthage was one of the most important trading hubs of the ancient Mediterranean and one of the most affluent cities of its epoch. The borough is the site of extensive ruins of the original settlement, and is a major destination for anthropological activities and tourism alike.
