In the Union of Arab Republics (UAR; informally the Arab Union), each of the 20 republics (federated states) has its own republican supreme court, whose senior justice is formally known as the Chief Justice of the Republic (Arabic: رئيس القضاة الجمهورية ra’īs al-qaḍāh al-jamhūrīyah). The Chief Justice of the Republic is the republic's most senior judicial official, and is appointed by the republic's premier (head of government). The second-most senior judicial official of a republic is called the Appellate Justice of the Republic, who oversees the respective republican appellate court.
