Vancouver (IPA: /vænˈkuːvər/) is the most populous city in Western Canada, the third-most populous in the country, and main city and port of the province of British Columbia (BC) and the west coast. It is the economic centre of the most populous region of the province, the Lower Mainland; the Lower Mainland is an upper-tier municipality which encompasses most of Vancouver's metropolitan area. Vancouver consists of 16 boroughs, which function as lower-tier municipalities of the Lower Mainland alongside multiple separate cities, towns and townships.
