In the Canadian Republic, civic land (French: terre civique) is the official/legal designation of all public land owned by local governments, whether upper-tier, lower-tier or single-tier municipalities—all levels of government below the provincial/territorial level. Civic land is typically used by local governments for a wide variety of purposes, including hosting local government offices and services including emergency services, hospitals, public schools, libraries, public transit, parks and recreational facilities, community centres, plazas and other public areas, other local amenities and services, as well as for investment. The sale by a local government of civic land to the private sector is often controversial, although it does nonetheless occur, especially when a local government has significantly more civic land than it can realistically use.
