Crown land (Canada)
In the Canadian Republic, Crown land (sometimes spelled crownland; French: terre de la Couronne), also known as royal domain (domain royal), is a territorial area located in any of the 13 provinces and five territories as well as the federal capital of Ottawa, which is public land owned by either the Canadian federal government or a provincial/territorial government of one of the provinces or territories, as well as public land owned by the Ottawa Metropolitan Council.
While "Crown land" can refer to public land belonging to the federal government or governments one tier below, it is a common practice to refer to federally owned public land as "Crown land" and provincial/territorially owned public land as simply "public land," although it must be stressed that this distinction is not official. Public lands belonging to a local government are officially referred to as "civic lands".
