In each of the 20 republics (federated states) of the Arab Union, the Deputy Premier (Arabic: نائب رئيس وزراء الجمهورية nā’ib ra’īs wuzrā’ al-jumhūriyah) is the deputy head of government, immediately subordinate to the Premier. According to the Constitution of the Arab Union, the Deputy Premier is nominated by the incumbent premier and formally appointed by the President of the Arab Union, and becomes acting premier in the event of the death or incapacitation of the incumbent premier until a new premier is appointed via a congressional election. The Deputy Premier is the second-most senior member of a republic's executive government (the Council of Ministers), and supervises cabinet ministers and other executive officials on behalf of and at the direction of the Premier.
