Deputy premier (Canada)
In the Canadian Republic, a deputy premier (French: premier(ère) ministre-adjoint(e)) is the deputy-head of government of a province, the head of government being the premier. According to the Constitution of Canada, the deputy premier must be a sitting MLA (an elected member of the provincial legislative assembly), and is appointed by the province's deputy president on advice of the premier.
The deputy premier undertakes a variety of the premier's nominal roles and responsibilities on behalf of the premier, including public appearances and making routine executive decisions, all of which are subject to subsequent review and possible veto by the premier. Like the premier, the deputy premier has his own official residence in the provincial capital, although the deputy premier's workplace is the same as that of the premier's, namely the premier's official residence (and workplace). The deputy premier becomes acting premier upon the death or incapacitation of the premier, until the acting premier or a new premier is officially appointed.
