In the Canadian Republic, a federal parliamentary republic, a deputy president is the formal head of state of any one of the 13 provinces of Canada. The equivalent office for the five territories of Canada is called the commissioner. A province's deputy president is appointed formally by the President of Canada (the ceremonial head of state at the federal level) on advice of the province's premier, the executive head of government at the provincial level. It is in turn the job of a province's deputy president to formally appoint the premier on advice of the provincial legislature, as well as members of the Executive Council (the cabinet/top executive body of the provincial government).
