The Directorate of Internal Affairs, usually referred to informally as just Internal Affairs, is one of ten directorates of the Lower Mainland Constabulary (LMC), which serves as the professional standards and anti-corruption department of the force. The commanding officer of Internal Affairs is Assistant Chief Constable Stephen Cadigan. It is the smallest directorate of the LMC by number of personnel but has the fourth-largest budget of the ten directorates; it consists of only three operational units, although all three units have a considerable investigation and policing staff hierarchy as well as administrative hierarchy, and resemble squads in their personnel size more than typical patrol or CID units, especially Internal Affairs, Unit 9. Despite the directorate's small size, it handles some of the most sensitive investigations and operations within the constabulary; in fact, all officers and civilian personnel working in any unit of Internal Affairs are required to have at least the bravo-level security clearance, second only to alpha-level, which is required of all Internal Affairs detectives as well as some officers working particular cases, especially those regarding witness protection and other extremely sensitive matters.

The three operational units of Internal Affairs are:

While all three units have equal powers under the LMC's anticorruption policy, IA9 is by far the premier anticorruption unit, containing significantly more resources and nearly twice as many staff as IA4 and IA5 combined.
