In the Canadian Republic, a district court (French: tribunal régional) is the lowest level of criminal court at the provincial and territorial level, along with the Metropolitan Judiciary of the City of Ottawa, the national capital of Canada.

District courts handle a wide variety of cases, with mostly cases affecting geographic areas taken from original case(s) taken over by circuit courts and their staff. Circuit courts handle more serious criminal matters such as armed robbery and murder, as well as district court matters appealed to circuit courts.

Some inmates who successfully appealed their case to an appellate court are transported by sheriffs to the court, along with inmates heading to other destinations.
