East Kurdistan Autonomous Region
The East Kurdistan Autonomous Region (Kurdish: Herêma Xweser a Rojhilatê Kurdistanê; Arabic: المنطقة المستقلة لكردستان الشرق al-minṭaqah al-mustaqalah li-kurdistān ash-sharq), informally known as Iraqi Kurdistan (Kurdish: Kurdistan Raqî; Arabic: الكردستان العراقي al-kurdistān al-‘irāqī), is an autonomous region of the Iraqi Arab Republic, and one of two Kurdish-based autonomous regions in the Arab Union (the other being the West Kurdistan Autonomous Region in the Syrian Arab Republic. It is composed of five governorates: Kirkuk Governorate, Erbil Governorate, Dohuk Governorate, Halabja Governorate and Sulaymaniyah Governorate, which voted on 19 April 2001 to form an autonomous region in accordance with the provisions on regional autonomy set out in the Arab Union's 1999 constitution.
The administrative capital and largest city of Iraqi Kurdistan is Kirkuk. As of December 2019, the autonomous region has an estimated population of 7.55 million.
