The Union of Arab Republics (UAR; informally known as the Arab Union) consists of 20 republics which constitute the federated states of the union; for statistical purposes and the convenience of the federal government, the republics are grouped into four unofficial geographic regions (Arabic: بلدان buldān; sg. بلاد bilād), which together account for all 20 republics. The 23 territories of the Arab Union are typically left out of this scheme, as they represent small, sparsely populated islands scattered across multiple gulfs, seas, oceans and time zones and represent a tiny fraction of the Arab Union's population and economy. Nevertheless, a fifth region has been proposed to group the territories, which would be called the "Insular Region"; it is only a concept, and has never been used by any domestic government or non-governmental organisation.
