Gaza City Council
Gaza City Council (Arabic: مجلس مدينة غزة majlis madīnat ghazzah) is the local council responsible for governing the City of Gaza. Gaza City Council is composed of 33 seats, with the city's 11 boroughs each represented by three seats, elected at-large by borough residents biennially. Following a council election, the new council elects one of its members as Council Chair at the first plenary session, who in turn appoints another member as his deputy. The Council Chair has 30 days from his election to nominate the City Manager, who heads the executive and administrative functions of local government on behalf of City Council—the nominee should have professional experience and education in public administration, urban planning or related disciplines; must not be a member of City Council nor of a local opposition party, and must recuse himself from positions presenting a potential conflict of interest (for example, membership on a contracting company's board of directors); and must be approved by two thirds of the council (22 members).
