The Gulf Arab Republic (Arabic: الجمهورية العربية الخليجية al-jumhūriyah al-‘arabīyah al-khalījīyah), colloquially known as the Gulf Republic (جمهورية الخليج jumhūriyat al-khalīj), is one of the 20 republics of the Arab Union, located in the east of the Arabian Peninsula on the southern shores of the Persian Gulf, the republic's namesake. Its capital and largest city is Dubai, whose metropolitan area accounts for over half of the republic's population of 10.2 million. Before the Arab Revolution and subsequent establishment of the Arab Union in 1989, the Gulf Republic was governed as an emirate.
