Halifax is the capital and largest city of Nova Scotia, one of 13 provinces of the Canadian Republic. It is an independent municipality, meaning that it is considered one of Nova Scotia's local government areas at the level of an upper-tier municipality such as a regional municipality or county, while consisting of a single jurisdiction not divided into lower-tier municipalities.

In December 2020, Halifax had an estimated population of 1.33 million and an estimated metropolitan population of 1.78 million. Halifax is home to the largest base of the Canadian Navy, as well as the operational headquarters of the Canadian Coast Guard for the Atlantic, the Pacific operational headquarters being located in New Westminster, British Columbia.
