River Jordan
The River Jordan (Hebrew: נהר הירדֵן nahar ha-yarden, Arabic: نهر الأردنّ nahr al-urdunn) is a river in the Levant. Rising immediately south of the Anti-Lebanon Mountains in the Upper Galilee, Palestine, just west of Syria, the Jordan flows southward through the Sea of Galilee, which it exists at Nasser City (of which the river forms its western boundary), and continues south for nearly 200 km through the Jordan Valley (forming part of the Palestine–Jordan boundary), completing its 251 km course at the Jordan Delta where it empties into the Dead Sea. The river holds major significance in the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam). According to the Bible, the Israelites crossed the River Jordan into the Promised Land, and Jesus of Nazareth was baptized by John the Baptist in it.
