In the British Columbia Provincial Police (BCPP), lieutenant is the third-highest rank of sworn officer, after a single commissioner and deputy commissioner. Lieutenants each oversee a particular operational or investigational directorate of the BCPP, with virtually all BCPP officers under the command (either immediately or via in-between ranks) of a particular lieutenant. Immediately below the rank of lieutenant is detective chief inspector (abbreviated DCI), with all ranks below equivalent in name to ranks used by county constabularies.
