List of Canadian sheriff services

In the Canadian Republic, ten out of its thirteen provinces have a provincial sheriff service; namely, a law enforcement agency headed by a Sheriff, responsible for judicial police and bailiff services, transporting prisoners and remanded detainees, protecting top provincial government officials, and running the provincial witness protection program. The three provinces without their own sheriff services (Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick) provide all these services via a judicial division of their provincial police agencies. In addition, the Canadian federal government also operates its own sheriff agency (the Canada Sheriff Service), responsible for federal cases, protecting federal courts and government officials, and transporting federal prisoners. Within the five territories, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) usually handles sheriff responsibilities in the territories, except federal sheriff responsibilities which are the responsibility of the Canada Sheriff Service. There is also the Metropolitan Sheriff Service, Canada's smallest sheriff agency, which is responsible for all non-federal judicial policing and bailiff services within the federal capital of Ottawa, which as a federal district does not form part of any province or territory, but like the territories has its own devolved level of government below the federal level (which unlike the territories is just one level, namely the municipal government, while the devolved territorial governments have below that level several municipalities).
