In the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC), the system of local government consists of two tiers. Each municipality is administered by a locally elected council. Upper-tier municipalities cover the whole province, and consist of counties and regional municipalities; each upper-tier municipality consists of several lower-tier municipalities incorporated as cities, boroughs, towns and/or townships, frequently alongside smaller unincorporated communities (which receive all local services from the upper tier) and First Nations reservations. The British Columbia Provincial Police (BCPP) maintains a detachment in each upper-tier municipality, which provides all local policing services to the upper-tier municipality and its constituent lower-tier municipalities, unincorporated communities and reservations.
