The Local Authorities Act, 2001 (Arabic: قانون السلطات المحلية لعام ٢٠٠١ qānūn as-sulṭāt al-maḥallīyah ʿli-ām alfayn wa-wāḥid) was passed by the Arab Congress on 30 August 2001, with identical acts passed by each of the 20 republican congresses between 1 and 7 September, 2001, thus streamlining the structure of local government across the Arab Union. Notably, the Act abolished the two-tier local government system used in some republics, replaced by a single level of baladiyāt administered by local councils.
