In the Canadian Republic, a lower-tier municipality (French: municipalité de palier-inférieur) is a type of municipality which, unlike an independent municipality, forms part of an upper-tier municipality, most commonly a county or regional municipality. Like their upper-tier and independent counterparts, lower-tier municipalities sometimes double as a capital of a particular political or cultural concern.
