Māoli syllabary
From JSC Archives
Jump to navigationJump to searchThe Māoli syllabary is the mostly deciphered original script of the Māoli language, the traditional language of the Māoli people, the native inhabitants of the King Christian Islands. While described as a syllabary, in many regards (especially considering the undeciphered or semi-deciphered elements), the Māoli writing system can be described as partially logographic in nature. However, the vast majority of these logograms, which number in the thousands, are not used in modern Māoli writing, for the most part even the fully deciphered set (although this set often occurs in place names, proper names, and culturally significant words).
