The Metropolitan Sheriff Service (MSS; French: Service métropolitain du (de la) Chérif(fe), SMC) is a law enforcement agency of the Ottawa Department of Justice, accountable via the Sheriff of Ottawa to the Solicitor General of Ottawa, the second-highest ranking judicial official at the local (ie. non-federal) level of the court system of Ottawa. In addition to operating remand centres (short-term detention facilities, as distinguished from prisons and jails), transporting detainees between jail, court and other facilities, Metropolitan Sheriff's deputies are also responsible for security of metropolitan court institutions and the public security and safety of legal and administrative personnel of the metropolitan court system. All regular policing in Ottawa is handled by the separate Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), while the administration of all non-federal prisons in Ottawa as well as the metropolitan (non-federal) parole and probation system is the responsibility of the Metropolitan Correctional Service (MCS).
