The Motor Vehicle Authority (MVA; Arabic: سلطة المركبة الآلية sulṭat al-markabah al-ālīyah) is an agency of the federal government of the Arab Union, which is part of the cabinet-level Ministry of Transportation. Its primary responsibilities are administering road tests and issuing driver's licences, administering traffic tickets and related police-issued roadside fines, insuring all privately- and publicly-owned motor vehicles directly or ensuring a vehicle's insurance by a private insurance agency, issuing vehicle number plates, and administering remedial programs for suspended drivers.

Number plates[edit | edit source]

Number plates are legally required to be fixed to the back of all registered civilian motor vehicles, as outlined in the Motor Vehicle Act, 1977. As the MVA is a national authority, the number plate design across the country is uniform. The graphic to the right shoes the standard form number plates take in the Arab Union, with the blank space on the left reserved for stickers showing number plate validity period (top) and vehicular insurance validity period (bottom); the blank space on the right side is reserved for a sticker of the coat of arms of the republic or republic-level region where the number plate was issued.
