National Nuclear Energy Institute
The National Nuclear Energy Institute (NNEI; Arabic: مؤسسة الطاقة النووية الوطنية mu’assasat aṭ-ṭāqah an-nūwīyah al-waṭanīyah) is an educational foundation of the Arab Union responsible for scientific research into nuclear energy and the union-wide standardisation and codification of its employment. Two of its primary responsibilities are routine research-based and experiential revision, improvement and publication of safety standards and operational regulations, and the performance of regular and thorough inspections of all nuclear energy facilities in the country.
The NNEI is also frequently contracted by foreign governments to assist with their own nuclear energy programs. While it is funded by the federal government of the Arab Union, the NNEI is officially an independent institution, and is governed by a council of doctors and other experts elected by its senior staff. The National Nuclear Energy Institute has its headquarters in Samra, Syria, an eastern suburb of Nasser City home to a major nuclear power plant.
