National Rail Transport Authority (Arab Union)
The National Rail Transport Authority (Arabic: سلطة السكك الحديدية الوطنية sulṭat as-sakak al-ḥadīdīyah al-waṭanīyah) is an agency of the government of the Arab Union responsible for the construction, maintenance and regulation of all railroads in the Arab Union (with the exception of urban rapid transit systems, ie. subways, which are the mandate of local governments). The authority regulates both the passenger and freight rail transport industries by developing and enforcing safety and professional standards policy and licencing operators and corporations. National rail infrastructure is owned and operated by Arrail, a state-owned enterprise overseen by the authority. The National Rail Transport Authority comes under the executive jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation.
