Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations
The Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations is an office of the Palestinian government under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is the second-highest ranking office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, answering directly to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. It acts as the ambassador of the Republic of Palestine to the United Nations, its officeholder (the Permanent Representative) being responsible for representing the republic at the United Nations General Assembly. The Permanent Representative is appointed by the President of Palestine on advice of the Minister of Foreign affairs and/or the Prime Minister.
The Permanent Representative of Palestine sits at the General Assembly in New York City, and has several deputies, who are responsible for representing Palestine at other UN missions such as that in Geneva. The most senior-ranking deputy sits at the General Assembly as acting Permanent Representative during the incumbent officeholder's absence. Traditionally, the senior deputy is appointed to the office of Permanent Representative upon the retirement or death of the incumbent, although this is not guaranteed for example if an election is shortly to follow.
