Local government in Rangya

Jump to navigationJump to searchIn the Kingdom of Rangya, local government is organised into two tiers which also function as administrative divisions of the country. The lower tier consists of 80 districts (Rangyayo: 区 khyu) which are grouped into 11 upper-tier units called prefectures (府 pyu).
Prefectures can take one of two forms: urban or suburban. Urban prefectures cover densely populated urban areas while suburban prefectures cover less dense and/or rural areas. The main island consists of 5 urban prefectures and 5 of 6 suburban prefectures, with the 6th suburban prefecture covering the kingdom's minor islands.
The way local government is organised differs between the two forms of prefecture:
- Suburban prefectures function solely as administrative divisions and have no prefectural government of their own: districts are formally known as townships (鄉 hang), each of which has its own council (municipal government) which provides most local government services; services common to the whole prefecture are provided by a combined authority specific to the respective service, which is equally responsible to all townships.
- Urban prefectures are organised in the opposite manner: a single prefecture-level council is responsible for all local government services to the districts, which are formally called cities (市 zhi) and which simply function as administrative divisions of the prefecture with no local government below the prefectural level.
