Governor of Syria
The Governor of Syria (Arabic: محافظ سوريا muḥāfiẓ sūriyā), officially the President of the Council of Ministers of the Syrian Arab Republic (رئيس مجلس الوزراء للجمهورية العربية السورية raʾīs majlis al-wuzrāʾ lil-jumhūrīyah al-ʿarabīyah as-sūrīyah), is the head of government of the Syrian Arab Republic, one of the 20 republics (federated states) of the Arab Union, also known as Arab or union republics. The Governor of Syria leads the executive branch of the republican government of Syria (the Governorate of Syria), and is chosen by the Syrian Arab Congress and chairs the Governorate of Syria, the republic's top executive body. The Governor serves at the pleasure of Congress with no fixed term length, but must maintain the confidence of Congress to remain in office. The current Governor of Syria is Ayad Abdulaziz Bekheitan, in office since 2016. The Governor of Syria is traditionally the leader of the political party or coalition holding a majority of seats in the Syrian Arab Congress.
The current Governor of Syria is Ayad Abdulaziz Bekheitan, in office since 2016; Bekheitan serves simultaneously as Regional Secretary of the Regional Command of the Syrian Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, one of the founding political parties of the Arab Union and the only party to form federal government since 1970.
