Canada, officially the Canadian Republic (French: République canadienne), is a federal parliamentary republic, which, in addition to the single federal capital district of Ottawa and five territories, consists of 13 provinces (provinces). About 95% of the Canadian population lives in the 13 provinces, mostly within 100 kilometres of the United States border; the five territories together have roughly the same total population as Ottawa, although the territories, while very sparsely populated, actually have a combined land area nearly double that of the 13 provinces and Ottawa. Each province has its own elected government with an executive branch led by a head of government called the Premier, as well as a ceremonial head of state known as the Deputy President.
