The Union of Arab Republics (Arab Union/UAR) is a federation of 20 republics, each of which functions as a federated states of the union, each of which has its own republican-level executive government known as a governorate, which oversees a number of executive ministries and agencies at the republican level. The legislative government at the republican level is known as a republican congress (Arabic: المؤتمر الجمهوري al-muʾtamr al-jamhurī), a unicameral chamber composed of representatives each representing a single republican electoral district. The republican congress is responsible for choosing from amongst its membership the governor, who goes on to run the republic's governorate as its executive leader, in turn appointing a deputy-governor as well as the ministers of all executive ministries under the governorate's purview.
