Rutenberg Dam
Rutenberg Dam (Arabic: سد روتنبرج sadd rūtinbirj) was a dam and hydroelectric power station opened in 1932 in Jisr el-Majami, Mandatory Palestine, which dammed the River Yarmouk one kilometre before it joins the Jordan, creating the Yarmouk Reservoir. Providing for most of the Upper Jordan Valley's electricity needs through the 1930s, significant population growth during and after World War II saw the power station stretched past full capacity by the late 1940s, requiring more and more supplemental energy via interconnectors and newly erected coal-fired power stations, thus proving seriously inadequate for the region. Much of the Rutenberg Dam was damaged beyond repair during the 1948 Mount Zion War, after which it was permanently decommissioned and replaced with the larger Two Rivers Dam, opened in 1950.
