Sandspit (Haida: K'il Kun) is the capital and largest city of Haida Gwaii. Located on a small, low shoal-like peninsula (a "sand spit") on northeast Moresby Island, the city is home to 331,238 people as of 2021 (nearly one-quarter of the total population of Haida Gwaii), and is the country's cultural and economic capital. It is also the country's premier international gateway for maritime travellers and trade, located just across Alliford Bay from the Port of Skidegate, also known as Skidegate's Landing, the largest industrial and commercial port and main passenger port in the islands, home to the main Georgia Ferries terminal (there is also one at Masset); a shuttle transports travellers from Downtown Sandspit through Downtown Skidegate to the passenger terminals at Skidegate Landing, including of course the Georgia Ferries terminal. As the national capital, Sandspit is home to the Haida National Assembly and the National Longhouse—both centres of the national government—as well as the royal residence at Queen Charlotte's Garden.
