Telephone numbers in the Arab Union

Telephone numbers in the Arab Union use a closed numbering plan regulated by the Telecommunications Directorate, an agency of the Ministry of Communications.

Telephone numbers follow the format +20 DC REG XXX XXX.

For landlines, "DC" (destination code) represents a two-digit national destination code, one to three variants of which are assigned to each republic, and two each to the Kurdistan Autonomous Region and Capital Metropole) can ; "REG" (regional code) represents individual service regions, typically covering a rural district, a small metropolitan area, or part of a large metropolitan area; and "XXX XXX" is the local number, the first three digits representing a local exchange, and the second three the subscriber number.

For mobile phones, "DC" (destination code) is a two-digit code specific to the mobile network operator, most of which are assigned two such codes; "REG" (regional code) represents service regions and/or subscriber categories, as defined by the operator; and "XXX XXX" is the subscriber number.

Dialing conventions[edit | edit source]

  • For dialing a number from a land line to a land line in the same region, only the six-digit local number of destination is needed; ie. 123 456;
  • For dialing a number from a land line to a land line in another region within then same national code area (within a republic), a zero followed by three-digit regional code and the six-digit local number of destination is needed; ie. 0 789 123 456
  • For dialing a number from a land line to a land line in another republic, a zero followed by the entire eleven-digit number is needed; ie. 0 05 789 123 456;
  • For dialing a number from a land line to a mobile number, a zero followed by mobile provider 2 digit code and the nine-digit destination number is needed; ie. 0 95 days 789 123 456;
  • For dialing a number from a mobile phone to a land line number, a zero followed by the entire eleven-digit number is needed; ie. 0 05 789 123 456;
  • For dialing from a mobile phone to another mobile phone on the same network, only the nine-digit subscriber number is needed; ie. 789 123 456;
  • For dialing from a mobile phone to a mobile phone on another network, a zero followed by entire eleven-digit code is needed; ie. 0 95 789 124 456.
