The Toronto Metropolitan Police Service (TMPS), informally known as the Metropolitan Police or Toronto Metro Police, is the local civilian police force of the city of Toronto, officially the Toronto Metropolis, capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Ontario. The Toronto Metropolitan Police is the largest local police force in Ontario and the second-largest law enforcement agency in Ontario, after the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
The Toronto Metro Police was founded on 30 April 1834 as the Toronto Constabulary, at a time when the city limits barely extended beyond what is today Old Toronto. It was the first professional police force to be established in Canada, following the example of the Metropolitan Police established in London, United Kingdom less than five years earlier. Following the amalgamation of multiple surrounding municipalities into Toronto as boroughs under a single municipal corporation and single-tier administrative division of Ontario, which occurred between 1954 and 1998, the Toronto Constabulary was renamed the Toronto Metropolitan Police to represent its expanded territorial jurisdiction.
