Tunis
Tunis (Arabic: تونس tūnis) is the capital and largest city of the Tunisian Arab Republic, and the 14th-most populous city in the Arab Union, home to approximately 2.87 million people. Situated on the Mediterranean coast between the Gulf of Tunis and the Lake of Tunis, the city extends along a coastal plain and into the surrounding hills. Its ancient core, a walled old city known as the "Medina of Tunis", is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Maghreb. The adjacent city centre of Tunis is known for its grand boulevards and avenues, French colonial architecture, and modern central business district. Tunis is also an important port city, hosting the Arab Union's fourth-busiest port by annual imports and exports. The city is served by Habib Bourguiba International Airport, located about 7 kilometres northeast of the city centre.
