Victoria is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Vancouver Island, located at the southern end of the province's namesake main island in Esquimalt County, the province's most populous county of which Victoria is the county seat. With a population of approximately 445,800 in December 2020, and a metropolitan population of around 1.55 million (mostly represented by municipalities in Esquimalt County and some in neighbouring Saanich County), nearly half Vancouver Island's total population, Victoria is the economic and cultural centre of Vancouver Island. The city is named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. As Vancouver Island's provincial capital, Victoria is home to the Vancouver Island Parliament Building, official meeting place of the Assembly of Vancouver Island, the unicameral provincial legislature.
