Wael Nader al-Halqi

Dr. Wael Nader al-Halqi (Arabic: وائل نادر الحلقي‎; b. 4 February 1964 in Jasem) is a Syrian psychiatrist and politician who served as Prime Minister of the Arab Union from 2012 to 2016. Previously he was Minister of Health from 2005 to 2012. He was appointed Prime Minister on 9 August 2012. He was preceded as Prime Minister by Omar Ibrahim Ghalawanji and succeeded to the office by Yahya Abdalati. Prior to his political career, he co-sponsored the 1996 opening of Hammamia Psychiatric Hospital in Khastakhanat al-Ayatallah, Nasseria, which to this days is considered one of the largest, most research-intensive and medically advanced mental health-focused teaching hospitals in the Arab Union. Following his 2016 retirement from politics, al-Halqi returned to the psychiatric profession, to this day running Hammamia Psych Hospital as director of its board of governors.
