British Columbia (BC; French: Colombie-Britannique) is a province of the Canadian Republic, the second-westernmost mainland province (after Alaska) and Canada's third-most populous (after Ontario and Quebec). Its capital city is New Westminster, which forms part of the metropolitan area centred around the province's main port and most populous city of Vancouver. The province borders the province of Alberta to the east and the United States to the south, just west of southern coastal BC (near Vancouver) across the Georgia Strait is the province of Vancouver Island, Alaska lays to the northwest, and the territories of the Yukon and the Northwest Territories lay to the north and northeast, respectively.
