Jump to navigationJump to searchThe Department of Public Security and the Police of the Governorate of Cairo (Arabic: شعبة الأمن العام والشرطة — محافظة القاهرة shu‘bat al-amn al-‘ām wash-shurṭah – muḥāfaẓat al-qāhirah) is an executive agency of the government of Cairo, Egypt, the most populous city and economic capital of the Arab Union. The department is tasked with promoting the safety and security of the city; its four primary responsibilities are: operating all city jails and remand centres (including transportation of detainees), protecting the mayor and his immediate family, guarding important municipal buildings and infrastructure including city hall, and finally, overseeing the operations of the Cairo Metropolitan Police Service.
