The Chief Appellate Justice of Canada is the head judge of the Federal Court of Appeal of the Canadian Republic, the second-highest court in Canada at the federal level, after the Supreme Court of Canada. The Chief Appellate Justice oversees eleven puisne justice who act as the Chief Appellate Justice's deputies, and who are appointed by the Chief Appellate Justice personally. The most senior of the eleven puisne justices is responsible for acting on behalf of the Chief Appellate Justice during the latter's absence or incapacitation, including presiding over trials and making rulings; the senior puisne justice also typically becomes the new Chief Appellate Justice following the retirement of the previous.
