The Deputy Commissioner of the British Columbia Provincial Police is the second-highest ranking of sworn constables of the British Columbia Provincial Police (BCPP), who answers directly to the Commissioner of the BCPP. As the Commissioner engages in many functions apart from directing police operations, much of the Commissioner's routine responsibilities are delegated, or deputised, to the Deputy Commissioner, hence the name. Immediately below the rank of Deputy Commissioner is the rank of lieutenant, the highest rank which may be held by more than one individual simultaneously. The Deputy Commissioner typically oversees 10 to 12 lieutenants, each of whom is in charge of a particular operations or investigational directorate.
