General Secretary of the National Command
The General Secretary of the National Command (Arabic: الأمين العام للقيادة القومية al-amīn al-‘ām lil-qiyādah al-qawmīyah), usually known as the National Secretary (الأمين القومي al-amīn al-qawmī), is the highest ranking member of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, the founding and ruling political party of the Arab Union, and ex officio political leader of the Arab Union. The National Secretary is elected by and chairs the National Command, which is the highest institution of the Ba'ath Party between sessions of the National Congress. The National Secretary is also chair of the National Command's Political Bureau (Maksis), which meets daily to act on behalf of the National Command, as National Command sessions are typically held only once every two weeks, and as such is de facto the supreme political institution of the Arab Union.
The equivalent position within the party's regional branches is called the Regional Secretary.
