The Metropolitan Department of Public Security (MDPS; French: Département métropolitain de la Sécurité publique, DMSP) is an executive department of the Ottawa Metropolitan Council under the Mayor of Ottawa, responsible for all matters of law enforcement and public safety and security within the capital which do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Canadian federal government (namely, Public Security Canada). It oversees the Ottawa Metropolitan Police, which is responsible for all regular (non-federal) policing operations in the capital. The MDPS also funds other emergency services like the fire department and emergency medical services. The Metropolitan Department of Justice oversees a separate sheriff service, which supports the local court system and operates the metropolitan correctional system.
